During a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Egyptian Minister of Civil Aviation Mohamed Abbas presented preliminary financial studies for the project which included funding the project through self-financing or commercial financing.

Madbouly stressed the need to involve the private sector in the management and operation of airports to improve their services and increase revenue.

In the context of a plan to boost the private sector’s role in the economy, Madbouly announced plans in November to offer private companies contracts to manage and run airports.

Egypt has recently taken serious measures to improve its business and investment climate.

The country is seeking to raise the share of the private sector in the economy to 65 percent, up from the current 30 percent, based on its State Ownership Policy Document.

Cairo International Airport was the busiest airport in Egypt in 2023, accommodating 26 million passengers via 198,000 flights.

Demand is likely to increase, as the number of passengers traveling through Egypt’s airports increased 28 percent in 2023 over the previous year.
