Nestle Egypt signs partnership with the Ministry of Education

Nestlé will implement the second phase of the "Nestlé Healthy Kids" Programme in Egypt during the 2011/12 academic year.
Creating Shared Value is a fundamental part of Nestlé's way of doing business that focuses on specific areas of the Company's core business activities, and in particular Nutrition, Health and Wellness. As part of this, Nestle Egypt held a press conference on February 5th, 2012 on the occasion of the signing of a partnership with the Ministry of Education, seeking to enhance the quality and content of Nutrition Education for children, and to raise a healthy young generation.

Nestlé will therefore implement the second phase of the "Nestlé Healthy Kids" Programme in Egypt during the 2011/12 academic year. The five-year Programme will benefit 500,000 primary school students, in grades 3 to 6, in 750 schools across Egypt.

The partnership agreement and the launch of the second phase of the Programme took place at the Ministry of Education in the honorable presence of Minister of Education Dr. Gamal El-Arabi as well as representatives from the Ministry of Education and from the senior management of Nestlé Egypt. Mrs Tengku Marina Badlishah, Global CSV Lead for Nestle based in Switzerland, was also present at the signing ceremony.

Phase II of the Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme in Egypt will cover 100 schools in seven Egyptian governorates namely Cairo, Alexandria, 6th of October, Suez, Dakahleya, Kalioubeya and Sharkeya with the aim of reaching out to around 80,000 students.

The objective of the Nestlé Healthy Kids Global Programme is to raise nutrition, health and wellness awareness of school age children around the world. Nestlé intends to implement the Healthy Kids Programme in all countries where it has direct operations. Healthy Kids programmes are based on multi-partnership approaches and are designed in collaboration with national health authorities, child nutrition experts, or educational authorities.

In Egypt, the Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme focuses on building sound nutrition habits amongst youngsters and emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet to help protect against widespread diseases including anemia, obesity and low immunity resulting from poor nutritional habits.

Modern and scientific teaching methods will be used to deliver the message to children. The students will be receiving nutrition education information to be followed by a practical game-like teaching process to give the students a hands-on experience of healthy lifestyles and eating habits.

"This initiative demonstrates how public-private partnerships can be utilized for the good of society," said Dr. Gamal El-Arabi, Minister of Education commending the initiative adding that companies can really extend a helping hand when complementing government efforts through their Programmes for corporate social responsibility. "This initiative fits in perfectly with the government's overall target of improving the health of Egyptians."

Within this context, Mr. Ibrahim Shobokshy, Under Secretary & Head of Central Management of Basic Education added "Today's agreement reflects the success of the first phase of the Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme, which we started together last year. Today, we continue this Programme, which aims at reaching 80,000 students to provide scientific and useful information in an interesting approach for the child. In addition, developing interactive ideas for the children encourage them to be involved in the application and get engaged in the Programme. The Programme raises students' awareness on the importance of proper nutrition, the need for a healthy body, and thereby to improve the quality of their lives. This will be reflected positively on society as a whole."

"As the world's leading nutrition, health and wellness company, we are committed to share our expertise and knowledge to enhance the health and wellbeing of Egyptian children through this Programme," said Mr. Suresh Narayanan, Nestlé Egypt Chairman and CEO during the launch adding that Nestle "values very highly the partnership with the government to address such important issues of national relevance and importance."

"This initiative also reflects our deepest commitment to Egypt", he explained.

Phase I of this initiative benefited almost 25,000 primary school students in 50 primary model and experimental schools across several governorates in Egypt including Cairo, Giza and 6th of October.
